May – August 2021: 5 Well Project Near Yakubukura in northern Ghana
Between March and April, 2021, the SWP team scouted several villages farther away from the home base of Damongo as potential sites for future projects. Previously, it has been a matter of great convenience to dig wells near relatively accessible roads or in places that have electricity. While this is absolutely worthwhile, we did not want the accessibility factor to stop us from helping bring water to the villages most in need of a water solution.
The team surveyed several villages, some nearly 5 hours by back road from Damongo. We identified 5 villages based on several factors including:
- State of current water situation
- Buy in of local community
- Village size
- Feasibility of well construction
The following 5 villages were identified: Kurakura, Yakobukura, Sumanikura, Nandam, ***. The gallery below demonstrates some of the current potable water options. None of these villages have a single well to date.
Phase 1 of the project will focus on digging all of the boreholes first. This allows the digging truck to complete several boreholes without having to make more than one trip to the most remote areas, which also saves costs.
Phase 2 will consist of outfitting each borehole with its appropriate mechanization, either via hand-pump, or a generator-powered mechanical pump. None of these villages currently have electricity.
